For some people with diabetes, could weight loss surgery really be the best medicine?

Two recent reports have found that weight-loss (bariatric) surgery worked much better than the standard therapy of Kind two diabetic issues in obese and fat individuals whose glucose levels was uncontrolled.

Those who had the surgery, which stapled the stomach and rerouted the small intestine, were much more likely to have a complete remission of diabetic issues, or need less remedies, than individuals who were given the typical regimen of diet, exercise and drugs. The surgery also helped many to lower their cholesterol and hypertension to more a more normal range.

The new research, published in late April by The New England Journal of Medicine, are the first to rigorously compare intensive therapy with these particular weight-loss functions as ways to management diabetic issues. Doctors had been noticing incidentally for years that weight-loss functions, also called weight-loss surgery, could sometimes get rid of Kind two diabetic issues although few randomized controlled research existed to examine the methods of gaining better glucose levels management with medications versus surgery.
